Patricia Spence is Executive Director of the Urban Farming Institute, which helps alleviate hunger and promotes self-reliance in urban communities by teaching small-scale urban farming so people can grow their own food. UFI converts vacant lots into farms, operates small farms, educates farmers, and advocates for the support of government, vendors, funders and others. UFI also runs “Fit Around the Farm,” a 10-week program for adults over 60 that integrates fitness and healthy cooking. Pat’s mantra is that engaging individuals of all ages in growing food helps to improve personal health and quality of life, but also builds a healthy, resilient community. Pat is a graduate of Brandeis University.
